belle and sebastian overrated
so here's the deal. my sisters favorite band is Belle and Sebastian. My sisters ex-boyfriend who turned out to be gay also loves Belle and Sebastian. An art teacher at my former High School loves Belle and Sebastian. Many many indie nerds or hipster kids love Belle and Sebastian. I like Belle and Sebastian. If You're Feeling Sinister is a good lp. The Boy With the Arab Strap has a few great songs on it. Tigermilk also has a few really great songs on it. However i am slowly getting tired of hearing bands name themselves after B & S songs or album titles. Now a lot of these bands are actually very talented induviduals that deserve a lot of respect. Yet at the same time sometimes i wish that they would have created a whole new Band Name instead of taking a song title and naming themselves after that. The other band that seeems to have many people name their bands after them is The Smiths. There are so many good bands who have done Smiths covers or have named something after the Smiths but at the same time there are some terrible bands that have named themselves in response to a Smiths song or lyric.
So what is it about British soft pop bands who dabble in depressing, lyrics that makes people love them, and why can't other bands have this same effect. i honestly don't know
and i honestly don't remember what got me started on this rant.
on that note go check out some stuff by each of these bands i have found in many cases that either people love them or despise them. I think that both bands are extremely talented even if they can get annoying sometimes but you can decide for yourself. Here are Four CD's for you to check out.
If You're Feeling Sinister-Belle and Sebastian
Try this B&S first. It is largly regarded as their best work and has a magical quality to it that's hard to find else where.
Push Barman to Open Old Wounds-Belle and Sebastian
A lot of B&S devotees would not appreciate me putting this on here but at the same time if you are just getting into the band this would probably be the next best step for you. This Collection has b-sides and singles spanning quite a bit of their career.
The Queen Is Dead-The Smiths
This is bar none the best music The Smiths ever put out. If you want to get an introduction to The Smiths start here. I promise that's it's the best place to start especially because it's the least whiney cd they ever put out.
Greatest Hits, Singles collection etc.-The Smiths
I will tell you that the next step if you like The Smiths is to buy one of their numerous collections of songs to see which kind of Smiths song fits you. Then go in look for the songs you like on CD and buy that one.
